Notes on the Statue of Liberty
· It took 22 years for the completion of the statue in the New York Harbor.
The Statue of Liberty Was handed over by M. Jules Ferry to U.S. Minister in Paris
. It took long mostly because of financial reasons. (Money for constructing the base of the statue had run out).
· The Statue still opened on October 28, 1886 with people crowding to see the statue. NYC even declared the day as a public holiday.
· Immigrates who came to America shared what they felt when they first came to America and saw the Statue of Liberty.
· These collections of essays about the immigrants and the statue of liberty first took place in 100th Anniversary of the Liberty's unveiling.
· The Statue of Liberty had a symbolic force all around the world.
· In China a statue made of Styrofoam plastic and plaster had a similar resemblance to the Statue of Liberty and symbolized freedom among Chinese people.
· Statue of liberty was sculpted by Frederic - Auguste Bartholdi
· The statue is about 305 feet tall
· 21 years elapsed between the genesis of the idea for the statue and its completion in New York harbor, 11 of those years involved the work of design and construction.
· French citizens contributed 400000 francs
· For about a year the pieces to the statue sat in 210 crates because the money 4 constructing the base of the monument had run out.
· One problem had occurred when the ship carrying the statue across the Atlantic Ocean nearly capsized during a storm
His European work, The Lion of Belfort, at Belfort, France, is among his most famous. A massive sculpture of a lion, it is carved into the side of a mountain, depicting the huge struggle of the French to hold off the Prussian assault until the end of the Franco-Prussian War. Bartholdi was officer himself during this period, attached to Garibaldi.

oBartholdi's father had passed away when Bartholdi 3 years old. He was raised by his mother

oScheffer advised Bartholdi to become a sculptor so Bartholdi began to learn sculpting under the Jean Francois Soitoux. He also took lessons in architecture
o He was inspired by the colossal monuments of the ancient Egyptians
oBartholdi created a statue based on the statue of Jean De Rapp. this large statue established the young sculptors reputation
oBartholdi worked on Laboulaye's statue of liberty project and found the New York Harbor for the site to put the statue

At the age of 19 he created the Francesca Da Rimini and went into sculpting
From that time forward Bartholdi’s fame had grown
Bartholdi's final clay model for the Statue of Liberty was approved by Laboulaye in 1875
